Father Nicholas Azar is an Atlanta native who graduated from Marist and the University of Georgia. Every Catholic milestone in Fr. Azar’s life has taken place within the walls of Christ the King Cathedral: Baptism, First Communion, First Confession, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. Fr. Azar is the oldest of four children of Donald and Barbara Azar.
Before entering the seminary, Fr. Azar spent a number of years on the business track after receiving an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business and an MBA from Wake Forest University in Finance and Operations. He had worked his way up the corporate ladder at Delta Air Lines, starting out as a Financial Analyst and leaving there as a controller of SkyTeam Cargo Joint Venture. Fr. Azar resigned from his corporate position in order to discern his call to the priesthood during which time he served as the Director of Youth Ministry at the Cathedral.
Upon entering the seminary, Fr. Azar moved to Emmitsburg, MD to the campus of Mount Saint Mary’s University where he studied philosophy for two years. He then was invited to begin his theological studies in Rome, Italy where he spent five years living at the Pontifical North American College seminary in Vatican City and studying to complete his Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and a Licentiate in Moral Theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.
Immediately after his ordination, the Archbishop assigned Fr. Azar as a Parochial Vicar for the summer at Prince of Peace in Flowery Branch, GA. He returned to Rome to complete work on his advanced degree. Upon graduation, he returned to Georgia and spent a year assigned to St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Gainesville, GA where he served as Parochial Vicar. There he ministered to the Anglo, Hispanic, Vietnamese and Youth communities and was also a parish liaison to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center and chaplain for the Knights of Columbus.
In his spare time, Fr. Azar enjoys the outdoors, hiking, and hunting the Georgia back woods for hot boiled peanuts and blue cotton candy. Once he settles in here at Holy Spirit College, he is hoping to find time to play a little tennis and golf. Fr. Azar speaks some Italian, Spanish, French and German and enjoys teaching Christian Anthropology in the Permanent Diaconate program for the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
